Welcome to Total Turf Experience

CAN YOU FEEL IT?

The Society for Historical Preservation (SHPO) concurs with the most recent submission of Richard Grubb and Associates, Total Turf's Archeologist; field investigations are completed and construction activities may commence! This is outstanding news for all involved with this project and the preservation of our history. Total Turf intends to have a discovery display within our Operations Building, showing the artifacts discovered and will offer educational information about this process.

The next step is to finalize the phase two funding and break ground. We have been working closely with our financial institutions through these difficult economic times and look forward to creating new jobs, educating children and of course, playing ball. We are aggressively meeting to finalize this process and are projecting a formal ground breaking ceremony within the next 45-60 days.

Total Turf Experience appreciates your patience and understanding and look forward to offering a the only dedicated indoor multi-sport educational facility in the Gloucester County area. CAN YOU FEEL IT!

Thank you-
Total Turf Management

Lacrosse Facts
Wikipedia

Lacrosse has its origins in a tribal game played by Plains Indians and Woodlands Natives in what is now the United States and Canada. The game has been modernized extensively by European immigrants to create its current form.
Native American Game

Lacrosse was created by Native Americans. Its name was dehuntshigwa'es in Onondaga ("men hit a rounded object"), da-nah-wah'uwsdi in Eastern Cherokee ("little war"), Tewaarathon in Mohawk language ("little brother of war"), and baaga`adowe in Ojibwe ("bump hips").[1]
Lacrosse is the oldest team sport in North America and possibly the world. There is evidence that a version of lacrosse originated in Mesoamerica or Mexico as early as the 1100s.[2][3] Native American lacrosse was played throughout modern Canada and America, but was most popular around the Great Lakes and Eastern seaboard.

Traditional lacrosse games were sometimes major events that could last several days. As many as 100 to 1,000 men from opposing villages or tribes would participate. The games were played in open plains located between the two villages, and the goals could range from 500 yards (460 m) to several miles apart.

Rules for these games were decided on the day before. Generally there was no out-of-bounds, and the ball could not be touched with the hands. The goals would be selected as large rocks or trees; in later years wooden posts were used. Playing time was often from sun up to sun down.

The game began with the ball being tossed into the air and the two sides rushing to catch it. Because of the large number of players involved, these games generally tended to involve a huge mob of players swarming the ball and slowly moving across the field. Passing the ball was thought of as a trick, and it was seen as cowardly to dodge an opponent.

The medicine men acted as coaches, and the women of the tribe were usually limited to serving refreshments to the players.[6] (There was also a women's version of lacrosse called amtah, which used much shorter sticks with larger heads.[7])

Lacrosse traditionally had many different purposes. Some games were played to settle inter-tribal disputes. This function was essential to keeping the Six Nations of the Iroquois together. Lacrosse was also played to toughen young warriors for combat, for recreation, as part of festivals, and for the bets involved. Finally, lacrosse was played for religious reasons: "for the pleasure of the Creator" and to collectively pray for something.

Total Turf: An Educational Approach

Total Turf Experience, is the brainchild of four Washington Township developers. It will have six professional-grade, lighted and environmentally controlled indoor fields, two full-sided outdoor fields and an operations building to include physical therapy, sports medicine, a karate school, a speed and agility school, a fine foods bistro and a sporting goods store.

During the approval process, Total Turf was mandated and has respectfully adhered to all requirements including research for rare flowers, birds and soils as well as artifacts discovered during the site research. There have been over 210 Indian artifacts discovered to date, none of which is significant museum quality and most are no larger than a quarter.

What seemed like a “wrench in the works” and a complicated issue that would hamper TTE in opening it’s doors on time to the South Jersey community, has turned into a blessing. Out of respect for our cherished history, Andy Logar  and the TTE Principals are committed to tying this rare artifact find into an additional educational component for the sports community.

“The native North American Indians were the first athletes to play organized sports on the North American continent” says Logar “and what are the chances that we would discover a part of history on the TTE property?” I think this is an excellent opportunity to not only provide the community with a state of the art athletic training facility, but to further commit to our desire and goal to provide a “total” educational experience for our families.”

That being said, the TTE team plans to collect historical memorabillia from a variety of sports to display proudly in a casual “mini museum” that will be located just inside the main entarance.

Logar continues by saying “I think it is important that our kids realize where their sports roots began and have evolved over the course of the past millineum.” I am a believer that everything happens for a reason and the archeological find that began as a hurdle in our development of the facility, is turning into an educational link to our past and one more educational opportunity for our young student-athletes.”
